I finished some more of my guest blogs for August and it's just too hot out with heat advisories to do much of anything. So what can a body do but get cool... werewolf style.

I immersed myself in snowy pictures and created Legend of the White Wolf's book trailer video. Haven't you ever seen a movie of snow and ice and cold in the middle of summer and feel... cooler? More refreshed? More comfortable?

See? I saw The Day After Tomorrow and other movies where it was cold, cold, and cold, when I was hot, hot, hot and I loved it. So if you haven't read about the Arctic wolves in Maine, grab the book and cool down for a bit. We all can pretend, right???

RomCon--My First Reader's Conference

One of the fun things about retiring early from the library and now being able to write full time without writing full time and working a day job full time and having limited leave is that I have time to do something new! Readers' conferences. I'll be going to Nationals, the writer's conference. But for the first time ever, I'll be attending three readers conferences this year!

And I'll be a featured author! What does that mean? I'll be participating in games, giving away prizes, and sitting on author panels where readers can ask questions. Plus, we'll be sitting at tables with readers for meals--some of whom love our works and some who will be new to us.

I went shopping yesterday, and I found the little jaguar case to showcase animal print wrapped butter mints to give away, little jaguar bows to put on the bear I made and Jared the Jaguar, who is the official host for my book signings. The lovely backdrop is a case that Loretta made for me to carry all my stuff in! But she also made me a beautiful jaguar one and I'll use them to showcase both my wolves and jaguars. Perfectly eye catching!!! At conferences, the authors that have something else to make their little space stand out, get attention. :) It's all in the branding. So I was delighted to find all the cool jaguar stuff and the cases are tall enough to make a terrific backdrop. The wolves in their corner, and the jaguars in their corner. Can't wait to show them off! Thanks again, Loretta. They are gorgeous!!!

For the games, we're supposed to dress up. One of the conferences has vampire night and elemental night...so we get to also dress for those.

For the games--I'm not sure what I'll do. I can't wear a wolf costume or a jaguar suit, so either I'll wear a blouse that has a jaguar print, or a t-shirt with one of my lovely wolves on it. :) 

I have a cape for the vampire night...still pondering what else to wear. I think I'd love to be a water elemental, but I need to get with my roommate and see what she wants to do. :)

Hope you all are having a delightful weekend. We have predictions of storms, hail, etc, but in any event, I'm finishing up Jaguar Hunt edits, and then it's back to A Hero of a Highland Wolf. :) 

Two more books I have to write this year and then I start all over next year. :) Will I get another in? Hope to!

Does He Looked Cross-Eyed to You?

Or just interested in a meal?

I really liked the tigers at the zoo because they show real interest in you. Whereas the lions just sleep, and the jaguars and pumas pace too much. But often when I go to the zoo, the tigers will watch me and I can get a good picture. :) 

I would definitely not want to move to close to him in that enclosure.

What's your favorite animal at the zoo???

I'm reading over Jaguar Hunt and making final changes, and then I've got to get back to A Hero of a Highland Wolf.

But I had some exciting news about a couple of other books. 

An agent (Louise Fury of the L. Perkins Agency) is representing my publisher and featuring two of my books at the BEA conference this weekend for foreign rights sales!!!

Nothing may come of it, but I'm excited that they will be featured and who knows?

SEAL edits are turned in! And now? I'm on a whirlwind adventure in Jaguar Heat!

 

As soon as I announced I had a new book out, a fan wrote me that she has MS and has been bedridden for two years and that she loves to read my books as they allow her to escape to other worlds.

Her story was very touching.

When I write, I get wrapped up in the heart and soul of the book, wanting to provide as entertaining a read as I can. I hear from readers all the time, but I never know when my books will be something more than an everyday escapism. Such as the fan who wrote who was sitting with a family member at the hospital and reading one of my stories at her bedside and it helped her get through the hours. Or the one whose aunt and she shared their love of my wolf books and the aunt suddenly died--and how she wanted to share how much they loved the books and had that in common.

Do you ever think of how your writing could make a positive impact on readers?

Does Your Mother Know? by Terry Spear

You read about S-E-X?  Or what if you write about it?

Does she know you read about R-O-M-A-N-C-E?

How about H-O-T and S-E-X-Y   W-E-R-E-W-O-L-V-E-S?

Or J-A-G-U-A-R    S-H-I-F-T-E-R-S?

Or H-O-T   B-L-O-O-D-E-D   V-A-M-P-I-R-E-S?

Or B-R-A-W   H-I-G-H-L-A-N-D   W-A-R-R-I-O-R-S?

Does she?

I've read romance books since I was little--you know: Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Rapunzel, you name it. They were romances.

So when did romance become a bad thing? My mother read a lot of different genres, including horror by Stephen King, but when it came to romance, no way. And S-E-X, no, no, no. And the paranormal?

As long as it was horror, she loved it. She made me fall in love with Dracula. Way to go, Mom!

She read my books--the sexless ones, or I read them to her, skipping over the sexier parts. We brainstormed for a new vampire story--this one was for my Kiss of the Vampire which is about 4 vampire teens who take a cruise to get away from their league of vampires who are ready to terminate them.

So Mom says, "Vampires on a cruise would be great! They have all those passengers to suck blood from. They can throw the bodies overboard and no one will ever suspect."

Sweet romance, Mom. I'm not writing horror stories. And that's how it went. My werewolves would shift and eat people and then return to human form. Mom, romance. Not horror.

When she'd tell friends what I'd write, she'd wave her hand and say, "Oh, you know that far-out paranormal stuff."

She was also a Trekky. Got me hooked on Star Trek.

So it wasn't like she didn't like far-out stuff. :) She just didn't want to read about R-O-M-A-N-C-E and S-E-X.

Which brings me to wonder why women who abhor those two things were all agog about reading 50 Shades of Grey??? Even my daughter (so this is a reversal of does your mother know--does your daughter know what mother reads...or writes?)--picked up that book, but quickly discarded it. But I was still shaking my head because if you want to go to the extreme, that book is it.

My mother would have been aghast. I was aghast that my daughter had been reading it!

So...that brings me back to our enlightened mothers...or daughters...do yours not want to know?

Do Settings Make it Real? by Terry Spear

Whether you want to be or not???

So this is Hawaii...isn't it beautiful? Wouldn't you love to be there? What if I wrote that the hero and heroine looked out at the vista. What might they see? If I describe a little of that, you are there, with them. And you're happy. Because that's what storytelling does. It takes you off of your couch and lands you smack dab into paradise. And this is what we see. Palm fronds, lush green and red vegetation, the blue, blue sky melding with the darker blue ocean.

Now, that can be bad because what if the author plunges you into a dark underground tunnel, and maybe you're claustrophobic, and so is the character? Or what if you're now in Scotland in a drenching downpour about to lose control of your horse, or in a blinding snowstorm seeking shelter before every blood cell freezes?

That's the hazard of reading a book. You could be perfectly comfortable on your couch enjoying a great story, and the next thing you know, you could be fighting to survive. :)

It's NOT the author's fault. It's the characters' fault. You see, they have these goals. They want, they want, they want. And it's not easy. Giving them what they want. All the time.

Love. Romance. Revenge. Justice. Peace. Whatever. They want it and then somehow the author has to give it to them. They make all kinds of wrong choices. You tell them, no, don't go that way. And what do they do? Just like kids, they ignore you. And you say, I told you so. But now it's too late and you have to fix their mistakes.

So here you are as the reader, perfectly fine with them being at home, safe and sound, and they carry you into the wilds of the Amazon, or on a race for your life in the desert--with only a half of a canteen of water left, no oasis in sight, and you need six full canteens to survive.

Do you ever feel you are in the setting of a book? And is that good? Or do you want to get out of it and pronto???

A Countdown to Howl! by Terry Spear

My Wilde & Woolly Bears weren't cooperating at all for the picture. Burgundy bear was whispering to Baylor bear about something. Her triplet was just being silly on top of the carriage. And Eagle Scout bear decided to do a headstand. But what can you expect from teddy bears?

Are you doing anything special for New Year's Day? I was going to go to a movie, but I got so far on Silence of the Wolf, I might just keep working on it. 82K, 8 to go!

Have you any New Year's Goals???

I wrote half of the blogs for the guest blog tour for A Howl for a Highlander before Christmas as the tour is earlier than usual!!! Instead of starting Feb 1 for a Feb 1 release, it's beginning Jan 21!Which means my first New Year's Goal is to write the remaining blogs!!! And finish writing Silence of the Wolf,  start writing the next Highland wolf story and finish it, and the third jaguar story. I've also got to write my next Highland Medieval story as sales are phenomenal, and the next YA fantasy in The Dark Fae series! And I need to pitch another couple or 3 stories to Sourcebooks.

And that's just the beginning.

I'm going to my first RomCon, AAD and I'll be attending RWA Nationals....

Personally, I need to continue cleaning out stuff I don't need or use....I feel so great when I do that...but doing that is hard to do sometimes!!!! I have boxes of stuff in my barn. How much do you want to bet that if I just took them to Goodwill, I'd never miss them? I haven't opened them in 3 years! So it's time to clean out and I've really been working on it. It's almost like losing pounds, which is something else I need to do!!

An Early Gift from My Editor! And Salado at Christmas!

I loved the old buildings in Salado decorated for Christmas. We walked all over and saw many of the homes/shops that are on the historical tour. Many of these were built in the 1860's. It seems a long time ago, until I think of visiting the Scottish castles!!!



Here are some more of the shops and their wooden walkways.



Inside one of the old buildings that once was a residence and now a shop I took a picture of the rock work and pretty mirrored chest, and caught myself in the mirror! I didn't realize I had. Debbie, poor thing, was my coat bearer while I took pictures. It looked like it would rain, but it never did, so we finally ditched the coats in the car. I kept apologizing to her for having to be the workhorse on the trip, and if I had wanted to hide the fact she was carrying our coats, I captured it in the picture. So no tall tales there...

I loved the stone work in the buildings, and in the mirror, you can also see how the glass door has a glass window above it. Many of the buildings had these. My friend kept saying, "Can you imagine dusting all this stuff?"

My mother used to say, "They aren't collectables. They're dustables."

But it's hard not to walk away with something cute from Salado. :)



The little guy in the middle who is playing his music? He came home for Christmas with me--my gift to me from Salado, my muse. :)



A dust collector? Surely not!

The Alpha Wolf Won the Cheese-Its! by Terry Spear

When we first arrived at the wolf pen, we saw this funny little fur-covered boxy-looking "toy."We wondered what it was. We saw the wolves way across the exhibit and I was taking pictures and we forget all about the furry thing.

Then we walked around the exhibit to the other side where we could get closer. At first, the wolves stayed far away from us, but then after we'd been there a while, they came right up next to the fence.

But trying to take pictures through the fence wasn't that great as I haven't learned yet how to not focus on the fence! So we walked all the way around the exhibit again and stood where the observation deck was. And this time they came close to the observation area. Well, I was taking pictures of other wolves, and not ready when the wolves found the "food."

Here is what was underneath the fur--cheese-it boxes and I'm sure it was filled with something to eat. This is the alpha--because that's the wolf that got the prize!

First There Be Scorpions

When writing books, it's important to feel the scenes. When I was writing Legend of the White Wolf, set in winter time during a snowstorm in Maine, it was cold, frigid, the house freezing. Perfect for feeling the cold.

Now, my cold isn't like...Donna's Minnesota cold. But then I'm not used to "real" cold, so it's all relative. Not that I haven't been in that kind of cold. I lived in Madison, Wisconsin, Boulder, Colorado, skied in Killington, Vermont (where you couldn't have one inch of skin exposed or it would have frozen), and Colorado, though it wasn't as cold when I went up there as it was in Vermont. And St Louis was one of the coldest places I've been in, a really wet cold.

We can't always have the "right" weather when we're creating the stories though. Often I'd be writing about pouring rain in Oregon when it was drier than a desert in Texas. It's humid and hot now, so perfect for writing about the jungle in Jaguar Fever. But to "really" get the feel for it, I needed to throw in some more jungle ambience.

I listen to jungle sounds that were actually recorded in the jungle, none of this jungle sounds to wild and crazy music kind of stuff. I scour tons of blogs about visits to the Amazon or Belize, watch videos about jaguars and their hunting habits and other behaviors, learn about the kinds of plants and animals that live there.


Did you know that Tarzan didn't swing off vines? They look like vines, but that's not what they are.


But what I needed was to bring the real jungle life into my own surroundings. Not. It's happened without my express approval though.

First came the scorpions. I've never ever had them in this area since I lived here, nor since my parents had. Not that they don't live in other surrounding areas that are more rocky than this. Sure, they're around, but I've just never had a problem with them, either while gardening or in the house.

Then came the snake. And yes, I've had one in the house before. My daughter-in-law found a snake skin in the bottom drawer of my master bathroom! Ack! I never knew! At my old house, my dog let one in while I was trying to get her into the house. We NEVER found it!

So I'm out watering yesterday and the snake (big, green and yellow, narrowed eyes...okay, so they were wide-eyed like mine) and I scared each other half to death. He slithered away and I ran inside to get my camera. He's gone. Not sure where he's hiding but because I'm watering, he'll hang around.

Hopefully, he won't come inside.

A friend of mine found one in her bathroom...her husband was naked and yelling for her to save him! He was in the shower, the snake on the bathroom floor. Okay, now what's wrong with this scenario? Nah, it's okay. Sometimes the heroine has to rescue the...er...uhm, hero. :)

So that's it. My pseudo jungle world. Perfect for creating Jaguar Fever!

Next on the agenda is writing 40,000 words worth of blogs for SAVAGE HUNGER for the last week in Sept and all the month of October. That means free books daily on each of the days I'll be at a blog site.

Then??? I'm working on Highland Rake! This is the third book in the Winning the Highlander's Heart series. It's started and I can't wait to work on it again! I've been asked forever about Dougald's story!!

So am I bored yet? Not even when I dream.
