Readers like series

I'm not personally fond of writing series and I never thought I would write one. When several readers wrote me emails after reading CHRISTMAS BABIES and asked when the next novel was coming and some even took guesses on who would be the next heroine among the five Ramsay sisters, I felt compelled to write VALENTINE BABIES, the seecond book in the Holiday Babies Series.

The new story starts exactly where CHRISTMAS BABIES ends: at the wedding of Madelyn and Nick, the heroine and hero of the first book.

In VALENTINE BABIES, the church wedding continues with sister number two as the heroine.

Chapter One

“Go now. And smile for heaven’s sake,” the wedding coordinator sputtered against Roxanne’s ear. “It’s your sister’s happiest day.”

The Mendelssohn Wedding March chimed through the Cathedral of Christ the King in Lexington, Kentucky.

Roxanne Ramsay plastered a wide smile on her face and clutched her poinsettia bouquet to stop the trembling of her hands. God only knew how happy she was for Madelyn and Nick.
But why did she have to receive that horrible email yesterday? Two days before Christmas.

If you enjoyed Christmas Babies, you should pick up Valentine Babies for a sweet, heartwarming read. S. Snowdog | 1 reviewer made a similar statement -----Fearless reporter, Roxanne Ramsay, doesn’t think twice before traveling for important assignments, even in a war zone—until her last trip leads her to a life-altering mistake.
At his best friends’ wedding, Dr. Greg Hayes, who has a serious phobia of planes, can’t take his eyes off the lovely maid of honor. But why is Roxanne blinking away tears? Getting involved with the strong-headed and too generous reporter involves more complications than the bright doctor has ever faced in the OR. Yet what wouldn’t he do to save the love of his life and her baby?

I love reading series, especially if there are repeating characters, ones I got to know in book one and get to see how their lives are doing if only a mention or two in the second and third book. It's kind of like revisiting old friends.

I have a series with five stories in it so far. I became acquainted with Julie Garwood's series years ago and enjoyed following the families. I really like them and hope to add more to my own.

I write stand-alone series so readers can jump in at any point and not feel lost. I like to read the same way as I pick up books at random that look interesting, and don't want to be lost either!

I wrote a series, by accident, when I wrote my Roman novel, MAXIMUS. The idea to continue on and make it a tale of generations seemed natural - so I kept on writing but each story stands alone. I really enjoy reading and writing series books. I'm thinking my current one may evolve into a similar pattern.

I'm a series junkie! I love them! Read a twelve book fantasy series once and would do it again in a heartbeat. To me the only downside is waiting for the next book, tapping my foot impatiently while the author adds those last few pages. Count me in for a series all the way!

Hi Vonnie, I too used to love series--before I started writing. I read several series by well known NY bestsellelling authors of the nineties. By the time I reached book three of their series, I realized that the stories practically repeated themselves. The heroes were similar; heroines were similar; plots were almost the same. I have the two last books of one particular NY bestselling author, that I bought fifteen years ago, and didn't read.

Like Terry said in her comment, I made sure that for my first series each story would be a stand alone. But it's a problem sometimes if you're referring to a character from the old book, you have to introduce him again, even if he's showing in the background.

Paisley, I remember two of your stories. They were very different.

Hi Christine, my current series also came by accident, when readers asked about the rest. Now while writing book three, I tend to think of the Ramsay family as dear friends. I myself want to know what will happen to the two younger sisters. LOL

Really AJ? Wow now you're convincing me to continue my series. I may be the exception who gets annoyed at waiting and rather not read more.

I love a series because I hate it when a story ends...at least with the series you might get to see characters you really like...again!

Hi Deb, you have a point here. LOL

Well I for one would love to read both of these and, I'm sure, any others that might follow, Mona! Congrats and thanks for sharing.

I have to agree with everything that's been said, a series is a wonderful tool for following multiple family members and friends. Nora Roberts likes to write characters who live in several books in a series. But like deb said, I hate to see them come to an end because you've been living with them for so long. I'm trying my hand a series but using a young adult group to draw from.

Series are my passion. I love reading them, and even more, I enjoy writing them. The series I'm writing right now was originally sketched out to be a trilogy, but has grown larger than I originally intended. It's one aspect I love about writing such a long story. Readers can get to know your characters so well, laugh with them, cry with them, and keep them near and dear to their hearts longer than just one read. I won't be ready to let go of my characters for a while. But I suspect when I am, it will be bittersweet moment--and one I will never forget. :)

Thanks for sharing!

Wow Calisa, you sure raised my morale ten degress. Thank you.

CMalone and t_mcclinton, thank you for sharing the reasons you love series so much. So writing a series is almost like watching a favorite show every week. For me, it's Gray's Anatomy, or the oldie, Everybody Loves Raymond.

Mona, I like series books but I agree with you - they have to not be the same story repeated.
